8th tunnel of Sevak-Rongpo railway project is being constructed
Himalayan Rail Dream Edges Closer Landmark Tunnel Complete for Sikkim Link
Omni 360 News reports on a significant infrastructure breakthrough in the challenging terrain of the Himalayas. The construction of a critical 4.1-kilometer long tunnel, connecting Teesta Bazaar and Melli Bazaar, reached its successful completion in the first week of March this year. This milestone marks the conclusion of the most demanding segment of the ongoing Sevoke-Rangpo railway project, a crucial endeavor set to bolster connectivity to the Himalayan state of Sikkim.
The journey to this completion, which commenced in 2020, was anything but straightforward. The engineers and thousands of laborers faced an extraordinary challenge due to the geological characteristics of the region. The underground rock and soil in this particular stretch of the Himalayas are remarkably “young” and unstable. This inherent instability meant that traditional methods, such as dynamite blasting, carried a substantial risk of catastrophic landslides or structural collapse. Such an event would have not only endangered lives but also severely delayed the entire project.
To navigate this formidable obstacle, the project’s Chief Designer, Armando Capellan, made a pivotal decision. Instead of risking powerful explosions, a team of approximately six hundred engineers, supported by thousands of skilled laborers, embarked on an arduous manual excavation. Armed with picks and shovels, they meticulously carved the tunnel from both ends, burrowing deep into the earth. This dedicated effort, sustained day and night, saw the two tunnel sections, designated P-1 and P-2, finally meet. The moment of convergence was met with immense jubilation, a testament to the perseverance and skill of every individual involved in this monumental undertaking.
Mohinder Singh, Project Advisor for IRCON, the agency awarded the project, emphasized the unique difficulties encountered. He stated that creating this tunnel was exceptionally challenging because the soft soil conditions simply did not permit the use of explosives. Every inch of the passage had to be painstakingly dug out. The workers demonstrated incredible dedication and resilience in the face of such demanding circumstances.
The Sevoke-Rangpo railway project, extending 44.98 kilometers, is designed to create a vital link between West Bengal and Sikkim. Of this total length, 41.5 kilometers fall within West Bengal, while 3.5 kilometers are located in Sikkim. This strategic railway line will connect the picturesque Himalayan state, which shares a border with China, to India’s broader national rail network. Officials indicate that approximately 85 percent of the overall project work has already been completed.
The ambitious project encompasses an extensive infrastructure network. It includes 14 tunnels, 22 bridges, and a total of 5 stations, situated at Sevoke, Riang, Teesta Bazaar, Melli, and Rangpo. Significant progress has been made on the station constructions, with most, including an underground station at Teesta Bazaar, nearing completion. Furthermore, 19 of the planned bridges have already been built. Railway sources anticipate that the remaining stations and bridges will be finalized by November of the current year. Among the tunnels, Tunnel No. 8 is now complete, while work on Tunnel No. 10 is progressing steadily.
An official from the Northeast Frontier Railway confirmed that the majority of the tunnels for the 44.98-kilometer broad-gauge line are almost finished, with only one remaining section still under construction. The laying of tracks is also advancing, utilizing modern ballastless track technology, which offers enhanced stability and reduced maintenance.
The total projected cost for the Rangpo-Sevoke project stands at an estimated 11,973 crore rupees. As of March 2025, approximately 8,358 crore rupees had been expended on the project. An additional 2,940 crore rupees has been allocated for the 2025-2026 financial year. The foundation stone for this critical infrastructure initiative was laid back in 2009, setting in motion a long-term vision for regional connectivity.
Rail sources reveal that out of the total 45 kilometers of railway line, an impressive 38 kilometers will traverse through tunnels, highlighting the engineering marvel required to navigate the challenging Himalayan topography. Looking ahead, there are also plans to extend this railway line further, reaching all the way to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, significantly enhancing accessibility.
The Project Advisor for IRCON has indicated that the entire project is expected to be completed and handed over to the government by December 2027. Once operational, this railway line will dramatically cut down travel time between Sevoke and Rangpo, reducing the journey from approximately five hours by road to a mere one hour by train. This transformation in travel will not only boost tourism but also facilitate trade and improve the quality of life for residents in the region.
