Massive Gridlock on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Following Gas Tanker Incident

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway had a big problem with traffic this week. Thousands of people were stuck in traffic for than 30 hours. This big traffic jam started on Tuesday evening because something dangerous spilled on the road. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is an important road that connects Mumbai and Pune the two biggest cities, in Maharashtra and it was completely blocked.

Incident Overview

The problem started at 5:15 PM on Tuesday near the Adoshi tunnel in the Borghat section. A big tanker that was carrying 21 tonnes of propylene gas which is very easy to catch fire was on its way from Kochi, to Surat when it turned over on the lane that goes to Mumbai. The propylene gas was being transported in this tanker. It is highly flammable.

There was a problem with a gas leak because some valves got damaged and the pressure inside was too high. So the people in charge had to stop all the cars from moving on the road that goes to Mumbai. They did this to keep everyone safe. The road, to Mumbai was closed to traffic. The authorities took this step because of the gas leak.

Emergency Response and Containment

The Chief Minister wants them to suggest ways to make emergency plans better for when bad things like material spills happen on the road and to make things less stressful for people when the expressway is closed. The Chief Minister is looking for ways to improve how the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation handles these situations so that people do not get too upset when the expressway is closed. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has to think about how to make things better, for people who use the expressway.

Current Status

Highway Police Superintendent Tanaji Chikhale confirmed that traffic began to resume gradually around midnight on Wednesday after the tanker was successfully emptied and cleared. While the road has reopened, authorities warned that it would take several additional hours for traffic flow to return to normal operating speeds.
