India’s T20 World Cup Disaster: "He’s No All-Rounder!" – Kaif’s Brutal Reality Check for Shivam Dube After South Africa Thrashing

The honeymoon period is officially over for Team India in the T20 World Cup 2026. What was supposed to be a smooth ride into the semi-finals has hit a massive roadblock, and the critics aren’t holding back. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has delivered a stinging critique of Shivam Dube’s role in the side, following India’s crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa in their Super 8 opener.
The “All-Rounder” Illusion?
While India has been grooming Shivam Dube as a medium-pace bowling option to support the frontline attack, Kaif believes the experiment is backfiring. In a scathing review on his YouTube channel, Kaif argued that Dube is “strictly a batter” and lacks the tactical mindset to be called a true all-rounder at this level.
The numbers from the South Africa clash tell a grim story. Although Dube managed to pick up a wicket, he was hammered for 32 runs in just two overs. For a team defending or chasing in high-stakes Super 8 matches, such an economy rate is a luxury India can ill afford.
“With the field he had and the plan to bowl wide to Brevis, Dube showed he wanted to be defensive. Nobody bowls defensively in the 10th over. You have to attack. According to me, Dube is a batter; he is not an all-rounder,” Kaif stated.
The “4 Sixes” Warning
Kaif didn’t stop there. He issued a direct warning to captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir regarding India’s upcoming match against the West Indies. He suggested that Dube’s 120 kph medium pace is “cannon fodder” for Caribbean power-hitters.
“We don’t need an all-rounder who bowls at 120 kph,” Kaif remarked. “He might take an odd wicket, but he will always go for runs. Against a team like the West Indies, he could easily concede four sixes in a single over.”
Match Recap: Proteas Dominate in Ahmedabad
The defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium was a bitter pill for the co-hosts. Chasing a formidable target of 188, the Indian batting lineup collapsed like a house of cards.
- India’s Total: 111 all out in 18.5 overs.
- Top Scorer: Ironically, it was Shivam Dube who fought a lone battle with the bat, scoring 42 off 37 balls.
- The Destroyers: Marco Jansen (4 wickets) and Keshav Maharaj (3 wickets) tore through the Indian top order.
Earlier, David Miller’s explosive 63 and a late cameo by Tristan Stubbs (44*) propelled South Africa to 187/7, despite a brilliant 3/15 spell from Jasprit Bumrah.
Is Sanju Samson the Solution?
With the left-heavy top order struggling, Kaif has urged the management to bring in Sanju Samson. He pointed out that having six left-handers in the top eight has made the team predictable. “Bring in Sanju to get that left-right combination,” he suggested, hoping to fix the balance before the do-or-die fixtures.
What’s Next for Team India?
India’s road to the semi-finals is now a tightrope walk. They must win their remaining two Super 8 matches to stay in the hunt:
- vs Zimbabwe: Thursday, Feb 26 (Chennai)
- vs West Indies: Sunday, March 1
Will Gambhir and Surya listen to the experts and bench Dube’s bowling, or will they stick to their guns?
