Government Announces Free Life-Saving HPV Vaccine for Girls Aged 14

In a landmark decision that is being hailed as a “shield for the future,” the Indian government has officially greenlit a nationwide vaccination drive to eliminate cervical cancer. This isn’t just another medical update; it is a historic step toward ensuring that the second most common cancer among Indian women becomes a thing of the past.

What’s Changing?

Starting this month, the government will provide the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine free of cost to girls aged 14 across the country. While the vaccine has been available in private hospitals for years—often costing upwards of ₹4,000 per dose this new initiative brings it to every corner of India, from rural health centers to city hospitals, completely free of charge.

The “One-Dose” Game Changer

One of the most significant parts of this report is the shift to a single-dose regimen. While many countries previously required two or three shots, the latest scientific evidence (and recommendations from the WHO) shows that a single dose provides robust, long-lasting protection for girls in this age group.

The government is using the well-proven Gardasil 4 vaccine, which targets the specific HPV strains (16 and 18) responsible for nearly 80% of cervical cancer cases in India.

Why 14 Years Old?

Medical experts explain that 14 is the “sweet spot” for vaccination. At this age, the immune system is highly responsive, and the vaccine is most effective when administered before any potential exposure to the virus. By targeting this age group, the government aims to cover an annual cohort of over 1.15 crore girls.

Is it Mandatory?

The government has clarified that while the vaccine is voluntary and not mandatory, they are putting massive “zor” (emphasis) on it through awareness campaigns. Health officials are urging parents to prioritize this shot, emphasizing that “prevention is better and much easier than a cure.”

How to Get the Vaccine

Parents can book slots for their daughters through the U-WIN portal (similar to the CoWIN platform used during the pandemic). The drive will be held at:

  • Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Primary Health Centers)
  • Community Health Centers
  • District Hospitals and Government Medical Colleges

The Big Picture

With nearly 80,000 new cases and 42,000 deaths from cervical cancer reported in India every year, this move under the “Swastha Nari” vision is a literal lifesaver. By removing the financial barrier, the government is ensuring that every girl, regardless of her family’s income, has the right to a cancer-free future.
