25 Found Guilty by Chinsurah Court in 2017 Child Lifter Mob Lynching

CHINSURAH, HOOGHLY – The Chinsurah Court has given a decision in a nine-year-old case. 25 People were involved in the brutal attempted lynching of a mother and daughter. They were convicted for their roles in the 2017 violence. This violence was caused by rumors of child lifting.

The Incident: A Night of Fear

On January 21 2017 the peaceful atmosphere of Asanpur village in Balagarh Hooghly turned violent. A mother, her daughter and their driver were traveling through the area. A mob intercepted their vehicle. The mob was fueled by child-lifter rumors. They dragged the victims out. Assaulted them. The mob set the victims car on fire. They even attacked the police officers who came to rescue the family. 11 Police personnel were seriously injured.

The Verdict: Life Imprisonment and Harsh Sentences

Judge Piyush Kanti Roy announced the sentences after a trial.

Gopal Ray and Purnima Malik got life imprisonment. They led the assault and tried to murder the victims.

The other 23 convicts got seven years of imprisonment each. They participated in the riot. Attacked public servants.

A Message to Society

The prosecution said this is a judgment. Public prosecutors said this ruling is a warning against mob lynching and the spread of information. In todays era social media rumors can have consequences. The courts decision reinforces the rule of law.

Local residents and human rights activists welcomed the decision. They said it brings closure to a chapter, for the victims. The victims survived the ordeal nearly a decade ago.
