SpiceJet Delhi-Leh Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Failure
NEW DELHI – It was a tense Tuesday morning at Indira Gandhi International Airport as a Leh-bound SpiceJet flight was forced to make an immediate U-turn following a critical engine malfunction. The aircraft, carrying approximately 150 passengers, declared a “full emergency” shortly after takeoff.
What Happened?
Flight SG 121, a Boeing 737, departed from Delhi at its scheduled early morning slot. However, at approximately 6:30 AM, the crew detected a serious technical glitch in Engine Number 2. Adhering to strict safety protocols, the pilots immediately notified Air Traffic Control (ATC) and requested a priority landing.
A “full emergency” was declared on the ground, a standard procedure that readies fire trucks, ambulances, and emergency rescue teams along the runway to ensure the highest level of safety for the arriving craft.
The Safe Return
Despite the mechanical failure, the flight crew maintained control of the aircraft and touched down safely in Delhi at around 6:45 AM. According to a spokesperson for SpiceJet, the landing was “uneventful,” and all 150 passengers were disembarked through the normal exits without further incident.
“The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers were disembarked normally. Importantly, there was no fire warning in the cockpit at any point during the flight,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Why It Matters
Flights to Leh are considered some of the most demanding routes in India due to the high altitude and thinning air of the Ladakh region. Such routes require aircraft to be in peak mechanical condition. While the specific cause of the Engine 2 failure is still under investigation, the quick decision-making by the pilots prevented what could have been a much more dangerous situation over the Himalayas.

SpiceJet is currently working on making alternative travel arrangements for the stranded passengers. Meanwhile, the affected Boeing 737 has been grounded and moved to a maintenance hangar for a thorough technical inspection by engineering teams and aviation regulators.
