A mild earthquake shook Delhi NCR on Monday morning, briefly unsettling residents across several parts of the capital. According to the National Center for Seismology, the tremor occurred at 8:44:16 am and measured 2.8 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter was located in North Delhi at a depth of nearly five kilometers beneath the surface. People in a few localities reported feeling light tremors, prompting many to step out of their homes in fear. However, authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of damage to property or loss of life so far.

Seismology experts noted that Delhi and its surrounding regions fall under Seismic Zone 5, which is considered a high risk zone. Because of this, mild to moderate tremors are not unusual and are felt from time to time.

The National Center for Seismology stated that this is the second earthquake felt in Delhi NCR this month. Earlier, tremors from an earthquake centered in Haryana’s Sonipat district had also been felt in the capital, increasing public concern.

In recent days, other parts of India have experienced similar activity. Gujarat’s Kutch district recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake late Friday and Saturday night. Internationally, mild to moderate tremors have been reported in Bangladesh, Japan, Taiwan, and Afghanistan.

Experts have warned that Delhi’s proximity to the Himalayan region increases the risk of a stronger earthquake in the future. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised citizens to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
