Saraswati Puja is often seen as a religious ritual filled with mantras, offerings, and celebrations. For many people, it is a festival connected only with books, education, and traditional customs. But in Kolkata, Nandini Bhowmik has shown that Saraswati Puja can mean much more than that. Through her work as a woman priest, she has turned the worship of the Goddess into a message of equality, inclusion, and human values.

Nandini Bhowmik is one of the few women priests in Kolkata who actively conduct Saraswati Puja. In a society where religious rituals are mostly led by men, her presence itself challenges long-standing traditions. However, her work goes beyond breaking gender roles. She believes that worship should not divide people but bring them together. According to her, true devotion has no connection with caste, gender, or personal identity. What matters most is faith, respect, and humanity.

She regularly conducts Saraswati Puja at her own home as well as at different community pandals across the city. These pujas are open spaces where everyone is welcome. There is no discrimination based on whether someone is male or female, rich or poor, or belongs to any particular caste or background. People from different walks of life come together to participate in the rituals, chant prayers, and seek blessings from the Goddess.

Nandini believes that the real blessing of Goddess Saraswati is not limited to success in exams or academic achievement. For her, the Goddess represents equal opportunity, love, and compassion for all. She often explains that knowledge without humanity is incomplete. Education should help people become kind, brave, and responsible human beings. This belief is clearly reflected in the way she conducts her pujas.

To spread this inclusive idea of worship, Nandini founded an organisation called Shubhomasto. Through this platform, she organises pujas in a modern and relevant way, while still respecting traditional rituals. The mantras are followed, and the customs are observed, but the focus remains on the message behind the rituals rather than rigid rules. Shubhomasto aims to connect spirituality with present-day social values.

One of the most important aspects of her work is courage. Choosing to become a woman priest was not easy. Many people questioned her decision and doubted her abilities. Some even criticised her for stepping into a space traditionally reserved for men. But Nandini did not allow these challenges to stop her. Instead, she used them as motivation to continue her journey and inspire others.

Her Saraswati Puja celebrations reflect this spirit of courage and equality. Volunteers and devotees participate together without hierarchy. There is no sense of superiority or exclusion. Everyone has a role, and every role is respected. This approach has attracted many young people who feel connected to her message and find her way of worship meaningful and relatable.

Despite breaking traditions, Nandini Bhowmik never dismisses faith. She strongly believes that devotion is the foundation of any religious practice. According to her, questioning outdated customs does not mean rejecting religion. Instead, it means understanding its true essence. In her pujas, devotion remains central, but it is paired with values like equality, empathy, and social responsibility.

Over time, her work has started a new conversation around religious practices in urban India. Many people now see her as a symbol of change, showing that traditions can evolve without losing their soul. Through her actions, she has redefined the role of a priest and expanded the meaning of Saraswati Puja.

In Nandini Bhowmik’s worship, Goddess Saraswati is not only the goddess of knowledge and arts. She also becomes a symbol of humanity, fairness, and shared dignity. Her pujas remind people that true learning teaches us to respect one another and stand together as equals.

As Saraswati Puja continues to be celebrated across Kolkata, Nandini’s efforts stand out as a powerful example of how faith and modern values can exist side by side. Her journey proves that devotion, when guided by compassion and courage, has the power to transform society.
