Panchthupi village in the Baran block of Murshidabad continues to preserve the rich memories of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. According to historical records, Netaji visited this village several times between 1929 and 1937. These visits were linked to his close friendship with Sunil Mohan Ghosh Mallik, a Congress leader and local zamindar of that time.
During his stays, Netaji addressed political meetings at Kalibazar in Panchthupi. Through his speeches, he inspired the youth to actively join the freedom movement. Many lesser known stories of Netaji are still remembered by villagers. One such memory is his night stay at the Ghosh Mallik house, where he was warmly hosted with traditional food like luchi, alur dom and payesh. These stories are still shared by the family and local residents.
To escape the attention of the British government, Netaji later crossed the Ganga River in disguise. Though the house where he stayed is now in a damaged condition, old doors, letters and memories clearly prove his presence in Panchthupi. Every year on January 23, villagers pay tribute to Netaji with deep respect and pride.
