With the arrival of the English New Year, Bengalis eagerly wait for Saraswati Puja, and 2026 is no different. The worship of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, art and wisdom, will be observed as per the Bengali calendar on 9 Magh. The festival is celebrated on Magh Shukla Panchami, also known as Basant Panchami.

The Panchami tithi will begin on

Thursday, January 22 at 1:39 am and will end on

Friday, January 23 at 12:29 am.

This means the tithi will last for almost 23 hours.

Anjali can be offered from early morning on January 23, as the Panchami tithi will be effective from dawn.

Devotees offer pushpanjali by chanting traditional mantras three times.

পুষ্পাঞ্জলি মন্ত্র

ওঁ জয় জয় দেবী চরাচরসারে,
কুচযুগ-শোভিত মুক্তাহারে।
বীণারঞ্জিত পুস্তক হস্তে,
ভগবতী ভারতী দেবী নমোহস্তুতে।
এই মন্ত্রে তিনবার অঞ্জলি দেওয়ার নিয়ম রয়েছে।

প্রণাম মন্ত্র:
নমো সরস্বতী মহাভাগে বিদ্যে কমললোচনে।
বিশ্বরূপে বিশালাক্ষ্মী বিদ্যাং দেহি নমোহস্তুতে।।

Saraswati Puja is not only important for students but also for people in jobs and business. It is believed that worshipping the goddess brings success in studies and growth in professional life.

According to popular belief, keeping yellow flowers, new pens, books, or items related to knowledge after puja brings positive results. Historically, Saraswati was once considered a river and later worshipped as a goddess. In the 19th century, the puja was common in pathshalas, and in the 20th century it became popular in schools and colleges.
