28-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped and Extorted on Silchar Bypass

A horrifying incident has shaken the town of Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district, where a 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of men on the night of February 19. The crime, which took place on the Ramnagar bypass road, has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about the safety of citizens on the outskirts of the city.
The Incident: A Night of Terror
According to the official complaint, the victim and her partner were traveling in their car and had stopped near the Silchar bypass around 9:00 PM. Reports suggest that while they were parked, a group of approximately 7 to 8 men arrived in an SUV (identified by some sources as a Thar).
The attackers allegedly dragged the woman’s partner away and restrained him, forcing him to witness the assault. The woman was then subjected to a brutal gang rape by the group. In a further act of cruelty, the suspects also extorted money from the couple, reportedly forcing a UPI transfer of ₹10,000 before fleeing the scene.
Police Action and Investigation
The Cachar Police have moved swiftly following the registration of Case No. 177/2026 at the Silchar Sadar Police Station. Senior Superintendent of Police, Partha Protim Das, confirmed that the case has been filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including gang rape, criminal intimidation, and dacoity.
- Arrests: One suspect, identified as Nilutpol Das, has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Another individual has been detained for questioning.
- Medical Report: The victim has undergone a medical examination at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), and authorities are currently awaiting the final forensic results.
- The Manhunt: Large-scale search operations are underway to identify the remaining suspects and locate the vehicle used in the crime.
Community and Political Reaction
The brutality of the crime has led to intense discussions on social media and a call for heightened security on the Silchar bypass, an area that many residents feel is inadequately patrolled at night. Political figures have also weighed in, demanding faster justice and better protection for women in the region.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified rumors or the victim’s identity on social media, as this could hamper the ongoing legal proceedings and violate privacy laws.
A Call for Safety
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for improved surveillance and lighting on bypass roads. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the swift capture of all those involved to ensure that justice is served for the survivor and her family.
