Union Budget 2026 Brings No Tax Relief for Middle Class, Key Changes in Income Tax Rules Announced

The Union Budget for the year 2026 was presented on 1 February, and this time it happened on a Sunday. This was the first time since the tradition began that a Union Budget was placed before the nation on a Sunday. As usual, people across the country waited closely for announcements that could ease their financial pressure. Middle class families, salaried employees, and small business owners had strong hopes from this budget.
However, the budget turned out to be disappointing for many in the middle class. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman did not announce any new income tax exemption or relief. There was also no change in the existing income tax slabs or tax rates. This means that taxpayers will continue to pay income tax under the same structure as before.
During her budget speech, the Finance Minister explained the reason behind this decision. She said that the new income tax regime was already introduced in 2024. Since then, people have slowly become familiar with the system. According to the government, taxpayers are now adjusting to the new tax structure, and therefore no further changes were made this year.
One important announcement made in the budget was about the implementation of the new Income Tax Act. The Finance Minister confirmed that the new law will come into effect from 1 April. This change is expected to simplify income tax rules and make compliance easier for taxpayers in the long run.
The budget also brought some relief in terms of deadlines for filing income tax returns. The last date for filing income tax returns has been extended. From now on, taxpayers will get time till 31 July to submit their returns. This extension will help many people who struggle to file their returns on time due to work pressure or lack of proper documents.
In addition to this, the government announced special relief for certain categories. Non audited business cases and trusts will now be allowed to file their income tax returns till 31 August. Earlier, these cases had a shorter deadline, which often created difficulties. The new timeline is expected to reduce stress and improve compliance.
Another major change announced in the budget is related to revised income tax returns. Earlier, the deadline to file a revised return was 31 December. Now, this deadline has been extended to 31 March. This means taxpayers will get more time to correct mistakes or update information in their previously filed returns.
Overall, while the Union Budget 2026 did not bring direct tax relief for the middle class, it focused on stability and simplification of the tax system. The government believes that keeping tax rates unchanged and improving timelines will create a smoother experience for taxpayers. Still, many middle class families were left hoping for better financial support in the future.
