Water Supply to Be Disrupted in Several South Kolkata Areas on January 31 Due to Pipeline Repairs

Residents living in different parts of South Kolkata should prepare for a temporary disruption in drinking water supply this weekend. According to officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), drinking water services will remain suspended in nine areas due to urgent repair work on damaged pipelines.

The areas that will be affected include Garden Reach, Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Behala, Kasba, Thakurpukur, Joka, and a few nearby localities. These areas depend heavily on municipal water supply for daily needs, and the temporary shutdown may cause inconvenience to many households.

As per the official announcement, water supply will remain normal on Saturday, January 31, until 9:30 in the morning. From 6:00 am to 9:30 am, residents will receive water as usual. However, after 9:30 am on Saturday, the drinking water supply will be completely stopped in the affected areas.

The water supply will remain suspended for the rest of the day on Saturday. According to municipal sources, normal water supply is expected to resume from Sunday morning, February 1. Officials have assured that all efforts are being made to complete the repair work within the given time so that residents face minimal trouble.

The decision to stop water supply was taken after officials from the municipal water supply department detected serious problems in several underground pipelines. In some places, cracks and holes have developed in the pipelines. Because of these damages, a large amount of water is being wasted every day.

Municipal officials said that the leakage has increased significantly in recent days. If the problem is not fixed immediately, it could lead to a bigger water shortage in the future. Repairing the pipelines now will help save water and improve supply in the long run.

A senior official from the water supply department explained that old pipelines, pressure issues, and wear and tear over time are the main reasons behind the damage. Some of these pipelines were laid many years ago and now require urgent maintenance.

Residents have been advised to store enough drinking water in advance to manage their daily needs during the shutdown period. People are also requested to use water carefully once the supply resumes, as pressure may be low in the initial hours.

The municipal corporation has also urged residents to cooperate during the repair work. Officials stated that such temporary disruptions are necessary to ensure better and more reliable water supply in the future.

Local residents, however, have expressed concern over the timing of the shutdown, especially for families with elderly members, children, and patients. Many residents depend solely on municipal water and do not have alternative sources.
