Winter Packs Its Bags Early: Is February Bringing Heat? What the Weather Office Says

Winter seems to be leaving earlier than expected this year. The familiar chill in the air is fading fast, and temperatures are steadily rising across Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department, the feeling of winter will almost completely disappear by the middle of February. After that, nights and early mornings are expected to become warmer.

Weather officials have also warned that strong summer heat may begin as early as March. Along with this, there is a serious possibility of heatwave conditions from April onwards. This early rise in temperature has raised concerns among weather experts and climate watchers.

On Thursday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius. Just a day earlier on Wednesday, the minimum temperature in the city was 15.6 degrees Celsius. This means the temperature increased by around 1.2 degrees Celsius in just one night. Such a sudden rise during January has surprised many experts.

The weather department has further said that the maximum temperature in Kolkata and nearby areas may touch 27 degrees Celsius today. Normally, January is known for pleasant sunshine, but this level of heat is unusual. Experts believe this could be a sign of a longer and harsher summer ahead.

Meteorologists have pointed out that the El Nino phenomenon is expected to become active in 2026. Because of this, there is a strong possibility that the current year may turn out to be one of the warmest in recent times. El Nino usually leads to higher temperatures and reduced rainfall, which can increase the risk of heatwaves.

In the districts of South Bengal, light fog may be seen during early morning hours over the next few days. However, as the day progresses, the sky will become clear and bright with strong sunshine. In coastal areas and western districts of South Bengal, minimum temperatures will remain between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius for now.

While South Bengal is experiencing a steady rise in temperature, North Bengal may see a slight change in weather. Due to the impact of a western disturbance, the weather in Darjeeling is expected to remain pleasant. There is also a possibility of rainfall in Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri.

Despite these chances of rain, no major weather changes are expected in North Bengal over the next few days. In the hilly regions of Darjeeling, temperatures will stay between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius. In the plains of North Bengal, temperatures are likely to remain between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts say that the clear skies and strong sunlight in January are worrying signs. Normally, this period should still carry a strong winter feel. The early warmth may affect daily life, agriculture, and water availability in the coming months if the trend continues.

People are advised to stay prepared for rising temperatures and take care of their health, especially children and elderly citizens. With winter slowly packing up, it seems that summer is ready to arrive much earlier than usual this year.
