Mumbai man held by CBI for trafficking Indians to Myanmar cyber fraud centres| India News
Mumbai Man Caught Trafficking Indians to Myanmar Cyber Scams
Mumbai. The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI has apprehended Shivam Prakash Singh, a Mumbai resident, for his alleged involvement in an international human trafficking ring. Singh is accused of luring Indian citizens with false promises of lucrative IT jobs in Thailand, only to force them into illicit cyber fraud operations located in Myanmar. This elaborate scheme exploited vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad.
The investigation uncovered a deceptive pattern. Victims were offered roles such as data entry operators or customer support executives in Thailand. However, upon their arrival, their passports were confiscated, and they were forcibly transported across the border into Myawaddy, Myanmar—a region notorious for its cybercrime syndicates. There, victims were compelled to engage in sophisticated online fraud, including Ponzi schemes and cryptocurrency scams. Reports suggest that failure to meet demanding targets often resulted in severe physical and psychological torture. Subsequently, families in India faced extortion demands, sometimes paying significant sums for their relatives’ release.
One B.Tech graduate, held captive for 14 agonizing months, was eventually freed only after his family paid a ransom of three lakh rupees. The CBI initiated its probe on March 13, 2024, acting on a complaint from a victim. Cases have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including trafficking, wrongful confinement, extortion, and cheating, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
During raids at Singh’s Mumbai premises, crucial digital evidence was seized, which is expected to further aid the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also issued an Interpol Red Corner Notice against the main perpetrators believed to be operating from Myanmar, underscoring the international scope and serious nature of this criminal enterprise. Omni 360 News will continue to monitor this critical case as investigations progress, highlighting efforts to dismantle such networks and protect citizens from these grave dangers.
