Kolkata Metro passengers finally have a reason to smile. After almost 15 years, a major and long awaited change is coming to the city’s metro system. The return ticket facility, which was once very popular among daily commuters, is set to make a comeback. This time, it will be available through the new QR code based paper ticket system.

This decision is being seen as a big relief, especially for regular metro users who depend on the service every day for office, college, business, and other needs. With this new system, travelling by metro is expected to become easier, faster, and more convenient.

Earlier, passengers had to buy tickets twice for a complete journey, once while going and again while returning. This often caused long queues at ticket counters, wasted valuable time, and created problems related to cash and change. The reintroduction of return tickets aims to solve many of these issues.

To understand why this change is important, one needs to look back at the history of ticketing in Kolkata Metro. On 30 July 2011, the old strip ticket system was discontinued. After that, tokens were introduced as the main mode of travel for passengers who did not use smart cards. Along with the end of strip tickets, the return ticket facility was also stopped.

As a result, passengers were forced to buy separate tickets for their onward and return journeys. For daily travellers, this meant standing in queues twice a day. Over the years, commuters repeatedly demanded the return of the return ticket system, but no major change was made until now.

A major step towards modernisation came on 1 January 2025, when Kolkata Metro introduced QR code based paper tickets. These tickets can be scanned at entry and exit gates, making the process faster and more digital. With this system in place, the Metro authorities have now decided to bring back the return ticket facility as well.

According to metro officials, the return ticket option has been added to the QR code ticket system, allowing passengers to purchase both journey tickets at one time. This means that a commuter can now buy a single paper ticket with QR codes for both onward and return travel.

The new facility was launched on a trial basis from Saturday, 17 January. During this testing phase, the Metro authorities are observing passenger response, system performance, and operational challenges. If the trial is successful, the service is expected to be rolled out more widely across the network.

Metro sources have revealed that even today, nearly 30 percent of passengers use daily tickets instead of smart cards. This group includes occasional travellers, senior citizens, tourists, and many regular commuters who still prefer paper tickets. For them, the return ticket facility is extremely useful.

With the new system, passengers will no longer need to stand in line twice. They can simply buy both tickets in one go, complete their journey, and return without worrying about purchasing another ticket. This is expected to significantly reduce crowding at ticket counters, especially during peak hours in the morning and evening.

Another major benefit of this change is time saving. In a busy city like Kolkata, where every minute matters, avoiding long queues can make a big difference in daily life. Office goers rushing to work and students heading to classes will find their commute smoother and less stressful.

Many passengers have also pointed out that cash related problems may reduce because of this system. Earlier, issues related to change, lack of small currency notes, and payment delays often led to arguments between passengers and metro staff. With return tickets and QR code scanning, such situations are expected to decrease.

Metro staff members are also likely to benefit from this change. Reduced pressure at ticket counters means smoother operations and fewer conflicts with commuters. Overall, this creates a better environment for both passengers and employees.

Experts believe that this decision shows that Kolkata Metro is slowly moving towards a more passenger friendly approach. By listening to commuter needs and using modern technology, the metro system is trying to balance convenience with efficiency.

Passengers have largely welcomed the move. Many regular commuters feel that this step was long overdue. They believe that bringing back return tickets will make metro travel more comfortable and practical, especially for those who do not use smart cards or mobile apps.

Although the service is currently under trial, expectations are high. If the system runs smoothly, it could become a permanent feature and may even inspire further improvements in metro ticketing.

In a city where millions depend on public transport every day, even small changes can have a big impact. The return of the return ticket, combined with QR code technology, is being seen as a positive step towards a more modern, efficient, and commuter friendly Kolkata Metro.
