What Happens When a Baby Is Born on a Flight? Facts You Should Know

When a baby is born on an airplane, many people think the child will get free flight tickets for life or a special foreign citizenship. In reality, the rules are quite different.

Some airlines do give small rewards in such rare cases. For example, in 2016, a baby was born on a Cebu Pacific Air flight. The airline gifted the child ten lakh “GetGo” points. These points can be used later to buy air tickets. However, this does not mean free travel forever. The points only help reduce ticket costs and normal airline rules still apply.

Safety is the most important concern for airlines when it comes to pregnant women. In India, women who are seven months pregnant or more are usually not allowed to travel by air. This rule is made to protect both the mother and the unborn child. In emergency situations, airlines may allow travel, but only after special permission and medical approval.

If a baby is born during a flight, many people wonder about citizenship. The citizenship of the newborn depends on the country whose airspace the plane was flying through at the time of birth. Even then, in most cases, the child’s citizenship remains linked to the parents’ country. Laws in many countries clearly state that birth on a flight does not automatically give foreign citizenship.

So, being born on a plane does not mean lifelong free air travel or instant international citizenship. While airlines may offer kind gestures, legal rules and safety guidelines always come first. These rare incidents are special, but they follow clear laws and airline policies.
