The Amazing Solar Eclipse of February 17: What You Need to Know

On February 17 2026 people around the world will see a very special thing in the sky. An Annular Solar Eclipse. This is also called the “Ring of Fire”. It happens when the Moon goes between the Earth and the Sun. But the Moon is a little far away to cover the whole Sun so we see a bright ring of light around the Moon.

I have been writing about things in the sky for a time and I know how much people love to watch these events. The path of this eclipse is very special because it goes over Antarctica, which’s one of the most remote and beautiful places on Earth.

Where Can You See the Eclipse?

The “Path of Annularity” is the area where you can see the Ring of Fire”. It is 616 kilometers wide.

  1. The “Ring of Fire”. This is the part of the eclipse. You can see it in Antarctica, where scientists at research stations like Concordia and Mirny will have a view.
  2. Partial Eclipse. If you are not in Antarctica you might still see an eclipse. This is where the Moon looks like it is taking a bite out of the Sun. You can see this in countries like South Africa, Namibia and Chile.

When to Watch

You need to know the time to watch the eclipse. Here are the times:

  • Partial Eclipse Begins: 09:57 UTC
  • Start of Annularity: 11:44 UTC
  • Greatest Eclipse: 12:13 UTC
  • End of Annularity: 12:42 UTC
  • Partial Eclipse Ends: 14:28 UTC

Remember, these times are in UTC so you need to convert them to your time.

Why Is This Eclipse Special?

The Moons orbit is not a circle so sometimes it is closer to the Earth and sometimes it is farther away. During this eclipse the Moon is a little far away to cover the whole Sun, which is why we see the “Ring of Fire”.

How to Watch the Eclipse Safely

Never look at the Sun during an eclipse without glasses. You can buy ISO-Certified Glasses that will protect your eyes. You can also use a telescope with a filter or make a pinhole projector to watch the eclipse safely.

Another Eclipse in 2026

If you miss this eclipse do not worry. There will be another one on August 12 2026. This one will be a Total Solar Eclipse. It will be visible in places like Greenland, Iceland and Northern Spain.

What Do People Think About Eclipses?

In some cultures people think eclipses are special and a little scary. In Hindu astrology this eclipse is happening in the Aquarius sign. Some people think you should not do things during an eclipse but this only applies if you can see the eclipse from where you are.

How to Watch the Eclipse if You Are Not in Antarctica

You can watch the eclipse online with NASA or other websites. They will have streams and maps to show you what is happening. You can also use telescopes to watch the eclipse, with expert commentary.
