That is the ugly reality of grassroots election campaigns right now. Politics is getting way too personal. It hurts the very people it claims to serve.

Here is how it all went down. BJP candidate Koustav Bagchi was out doing his usual door-to-door rounds on Saturday. He stopped by a local voter’s house and asked the golden question: who gets your vote? The woman honestly replied she preferred the ruling Trinamool Congress. According to her, that honest answer set him off. She claims he completely lost his temper and aggressively threatened her. He allegedly warned he would deal with her after the election results drop on May 4. She was so terrified by the encounter that she went straight to the Titagarh police station to file a formal complaint. It’s a messy situation. No voter should ever feel unsafe in their own living room.

Are campaign tactics crossing a dangerous line?

Bagchi is fiercely denying the whole thing. He claims it is a completely fabricated story. He says he simply told the woman to vote for whoever she wants, but asked her not to be rude to guests who visit her home. He even pointed the finger at his rival, TMC star candidate Raj Chakraborty, claiming Raj is desperate because he knows a massive defeat is coming. Raj, on the other hand, fired back instantly. He stated that aggressive threats and violence are simply not part of Bengal’s culture.

What’s actually happening here is simple: local politicians are feeling the heat, voters are caught in the crossfire, and basic politeness is completely out the window. When campaigns rely on intimidation instead of inspiration, democracy takes a massive hit. We see this same tired script play out in every major election cycle. Candidates get extremely nervous. Tempers flare up on the streets. Then, ordinary citizens pay the heavy price. The real test is not just what happens on voting day. It is about how these leaders treat the people who actively disagree with them. True leadership requires thick skin. If you cannot handle a voter saying no to your face, you probably have no business asking for their trust in the first place. Barrackpore voters will have the final say on April 29.
