Blood on the Streets: The Tragic End of ‘Mr. Dependable’

Imagine driving home after a long day of work, thinking only of your family, and then suddenly seeing two strangers on a bike block your path. In a heartbeat, the silence of the night is shattered by gunfire. This wasn’t a movie scene. It was the final moments of Chandranath Rath, a man his colleagues called ‘Mr. Dependable’.

It happened Wednesday night in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram. Two attackers on a bike—conveniently missing a number plate—stopped Rath’s car. They didn’t want money or a confession. They just opened fire. Rath was hit in the chest, stomach, and head. By the time he reached Viva City Hospital, he was gone. His driver is currently in a private hospital, fighting for his life. It’s a brutal, cold-blooded hit that has sent shockwaves through West Bengal.

Is this just political rivalry or a deeper rot?

Here is the thing about politics in Bengal: the voting ends, but the war doesn’t. Suvendu Adhikari isn’t hiding his suspicions. He’s called this a pre-planned murder. Meanwhile, Rudranil Ghosh is directly pointing fingers at the TMC, claiming this is exactly how the ruling party operates. On the other side, the TMC is playing a double game. They’ve condemned the murder, but they’ve also reminded everyone that three of their own workers were killed by BJP-backed goons in the last few days. They’re calling for a CBI probe, but we’ve heard that song before.

What’s actually happening here is simple: aides and workers are becoming pawns. Agnimitra Paul insists Rath was non-political, but in a state this polarized, being “close” to a leader is enough to put a target on your back. When the people who keep the gears turning—the assistants, the drivers, the organizers—start getting executed in the street, the system isn’t just broken. It’s murderous.

The Atomic Answer: Chandranath Rath, a key aide to Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by bike-borne assailants in Madhyamgram. This killing, along with the deaths of three TMC workers, has sparked a fierce political battle, with both the BJP and TMC accusing each other of orchestrating post-election violence.

If this keeps up, the election results won’t matter. The only thing that will remain is a trail of bodies and a culture of fear that no amount of political rhetoric can fix. We need answers, not just press releases.
